The small panel listing protein, fat, fibre and moisture is the most quoted part of a dog food label and the most frequently misread. Its structure explains why.
They are bounds, not measurements
Protein and fat are stated as minimums. The food contains at least that much and may contain considerably more.
Fibre and moisture are stated as maximums, working in the opposite direction. The actual content may be well below the printed figure.
A product listing a minimum of a given protein level may consistently test higher, and two foods printing the same number may not be equivalent at all.
Quantity says nothing about source
The protein figure is derived from nitrogen content, which does not distinguish between protein a dog can use efficiently and protein it cannot.
Connective tissue, feather meal and plant protein all register. Two foods with identical protein figures can differ substantially in the amino acids actually delivered.
Digestibility is the missing variable throughout, and it does not appear on the panel in any form. It is measured in feeding studies rather than chemical analysis.
The ash figure and what it stands for
Some panels list ash, which is the mineral residue remaining after the organic material is burned away. It is a proxy for total mineral content.
A high figure often indicates a large proportion of bone-derived material, which raises calcium and phosphorus levels along with it.
This matters most for large-breed puppies, where excess calcium during growth is a recognised concern, and it is a reason to follow the life-stage statement rather than the protein number.
What the ingredient list adds and does not
Ingredients are listed by weight before cooking, which systematically favours wet ingredients over dry ones.
Fresh meat is largely water, so a meat listed first may contribute less to the finished food than a dry ingredient listed second. Meat meal has already had water removed and compares differently.
Splitting a single ingredient category across several named entries also moves each individual entry further down the list without changing the total.
Reading a label usefully
The most informative parts of a bag are the ones people skim: the life-stage statement, the substantiation method, and the calorie content per unit.
Calories allow a genuine comparison of how much food a dog needs, which the analysis panel does not.
Where a dog has a diagnosed condition, none of this substitutes for veterinary direction on which diet is appropriate. Label reading narrows a shelf; it does not select a therapeutic food.
