Pedigree breeding operates on a rule that seems administrative and is in fact biological: a registered dog must have registered parents. That rule has consequences that accumulate over generations.
What closing a registry means
When a breed is formally recognised, a founding group of animals is registered and the book is closed to outside additions.
From that point every subsequent member of the breed descends from that founding group, and no new genetic material enters.
The founding group is often small, sometimes a few dozen animals, and popular sires within it can be over-represented from the start.
Why variation declines
In any finite closed population, some variants are lost purely by chance each generation, because not every animal reproduces and not every gene copy is passed on.
Losses are permanent when there is no route for new material to enter, so diversity moves in one direction over time.
The rate depends on the effective population size, which is generally far smaller than the number of registered dogs because breeding is concentrated in relatively few animals.
Popular sires and their effect
A single male can father a very large number of litters, and a successful show dog frequently does.
The next generation therefore carries a disproportionate share of that animal's genetics, which reduces effective population size sharply in a single step.
Any recessive variant that dog carried is distributed widely, which is how a condition that was previously rare becomes common within a breed over a couple of generations.
Why recessive conditions surface
A recessive condition requires two copies to produce disease, so carriers are unaffected and invisible without testing.
In a diverse population two carriers rarely meet. As relatedness increases across a closed population, the probability rises steadily.
This is why particular conditions cluster in particular breeds rather than being distributed evenly, and why DNA testing for known variants has become central to breeding decisions.
What is being done about it
Coefficient of inbreeding calculations allow breeders to estimate relatedness between a proposed pair and select combinations that limit further loss.
A small number of breeds have reopened their registries in a controlled way, introducing outside animals to reintroduce variation, though this remains contentious.
For a prospective owner, the practical questions are which conditions the breed is known for, what testing exists, and whether both parents were tested — information a breed club or veterinarian can supply.
