Dogs appear at the door before the school run and start pacing before the usual feeding time. They are not reading clocks, and the mechanisms they do use are worth separating out.
Internal rhythms set the coarse pattern
Like other mammals, dogs run on an internal daily cycle regulated by light, which governs hormone release, body temperature and appetite across roughly a day.
That cycle produces reliable rises in alertness and hunger at similar points each day, independent of anything happening in the household.
It explains anticipation of events tied to the daily round, such as morning waking and evening settling, but it is far too coarse to explain accuracy within a few minutes.
Scent decay as a clock
The more interesting mechanism is olfactory. When a person leaves a house, the concentration of their scent begins falling in a predictable curve.
A dog living in that space experiences a smell that fades steadily through the day. The strength of the residue at any moment corresponds to how long the person has been gone.
A dog that has experienced the same absence hundreds of times can learn what level of fading precedes a return. This is why routine departures are anticipated more accurately than irregular ones.
Environmental cues do a great deal of the work
Households run on repeating sequences, and dogs are highly attentive to the order of events rather than their duration.
The angle of light across a floor, traffic noise thickening at a particular hour, a neighbour's routine, a television schedule audible through a wall — each marks a position in the day.
Owners frequently underestimate how much of the anticipated timing comes from these external markers, and how little needs to be tracked internally at all.
What dogs seem not to do
There is no good evidence that dogs represent time as a quantity, or hold a plan for a moment in the future the way people do.
Their responses look like learned associations and gradient reading rather than counting. A dog does not appear to know that four hours have passed; it knows the house smells like four hours.
This distinction matters for separation problems, because it means the passage of time itself is not what the dog is reacting to.
Why routine changes cause visible unsettling
A dog that has learned a sequence experiences a broken sequence as a genuine loss of prediction. The signals that normally precede an event stop working.
Shifting clocks, a change in working hours, or a household member leaving for a long period all disturb the cue structure rather than the schedule alone.
Rebuilding a stable order of events, even with different timings, usually settles a dog faster than trying to restore the original hours exactly.
